I’m a newly chrismated member of the church, and Abba Dorotheos is my patron. This is the only icon I could find that was written in English and that showed Abba with a desert background. Overall the quality of the icon is great. I got a large size mounted on wood for our prayer corner. The only thing I don’t like is that the words on the scroll are difficult to read due to the font. Otherwise I really like this icon!
Dorotheos of Gaza is consider to be required reading for all who seek to embark upon the monastic life. As one who has monastic aspirations, I wanted an icon of this foundational and influential holy father, as one who will intercede for me as I seek to fulfill my desire, should it be blessed by God. This icon locates him in the midst of the desert environment that nurtured his strict ascetic life of total dedication to Christ. I am overjoyed to have such a beautiful icon of this monastic giant on my wall where I can easily remember to call upon his all-powerful prayers.
The icon is a more modern rendering of the Saint. The words on the scroll he holds are in English (as is the title of the Saint himself). The icon is beautifully done, and, for me, brings his presence more readily to me as I read and pray before it.
